Public Engagment Projects in the International Faculty

Last week we held the graduation ceremony for our graduates. On the side of this big event we organised a smaller event on public engagement. We watched five success stories. These are all ideas which have been developed and implemented by the University of Sheffield International Faculty. We, at the IF, have started to build a mentality and an environment to facilitate volunteering and civic engagement. Students and colleagues volunteered to share your scientific knowledge, as well as your skills and creativity, with the society and general public. Their contribution and impact on the local (and not only) community has been outstanding. In addition, such projects provide the students with an opportunity to obtain professional practice in a safe and ethical environment.

Their presentations were well received by our colleagues from Sheffield. We have already started thinking of ways to open this even further and/or transfer the event to Sheffield, where they feel that colleagues there would benefit  a lot from seeing your projects.

The Vice-Chancellor said in his message: "But our International Faculty does not only teach and research. As in Sheffield, students and staff are involved in superb public engagement work and changing civic society. They are motivated by academic values and committed to using their understanding to make the world a better place."

The five projects, are the following (a short video accompanies them):
Employability and Social Responsibility: Students offer IT solutions to charity organizations

by Dimitris Dranidis, Kostas Margaritis

50+ Technology Project
by Giorgos Pavlidis, Dimitra Petridou, Despina Papadaki

Supporting Early Stage Entrepreneurship in Europe and SEE
by Andreas Bofinger

'Supporting the local community through our counseling center'
by Suzie Savvidou, Zizi Skorda

'Open your eyes': Social awareness about cancer patient

With this post I would like to warmly thank all colleagues and students for their participation to the Public Engagement event. Congratulations!
